FierceWireless posted today about Huawei’s move to the smartphone market in 2009, and their plans to make devices that work on the Symbian OS and Google’s Android platform.
No surpise – although we’ve heard the buzz lately about Moto recruiting Android Developers (it’s true!), I’m sure it will be a while before they phase out Symbian development altogether.
It just makes sense that Huawei would enter this market – they’ll stand a much better chance of selling more phones!
And, this is good for those recruiters out there who are already in the process of recruiting Symbian Developers – did I mention a couple of Symbian jobs I’m currently working on? Check ‘em out HERE and HERE.

Finnish mobile giant Nokia has announced that it is trimming down its operations by cutting over 600 positions, mainly in marketing and sales departments.
The Nokia Research Center (NRC), the business unit that explores and develops technologies that will be available in the marketplace in five to ten years, will also focus on fewer research areas from now on.
Like many businesses, Nokia is feeling the nasty sting of the economic downturn. Its recently announced Q3 earnings weren’t spectacular either (down over 28 percent on a year earlier), so these lay-offs don’t exactly come unexpectedly. It’s easy enough to find the irony when you look at the two news releases side by side, but I think Nokia is actually making the right strategic move by shifting its focus to custom internet services for countries where there is much room for growth and very specific needs.

This could get very interesting.
The Federal Communications Commission has opened up so-called wireless white spaces–unused spectrum between broadcast channels–in a move the agency hopes paves the way for ‘Wi-Fi on Steroids’.
You might be surprised at Larry Dignan’s predictions regarding the white-space winners and losers.
Check out his post HERE.

Todd Spangler (MultiChannel News) reports today that Cox Communications is going to give the wireless market another crack, teaming up with Sprint to get in the market “quickly.”
Cox, however, will continue building their own 3G wireless network in hopes of a 2009 launch date.
Cox has spent a lot of money on spectrum ($500m), so it’s no surprise they are going to continue down the wireless path. They’re banking on the fact that their customers, 6.2 million strong, will
include wireless as part of the multi-service experience with Cox (64% already subscribe to multiple services).
Are Cox customers so “in love” with the Cox experience that they are willing to swap their current wireless provider for a bigger communications bundle?
We shall see.
