The Top Ten Tech Companies .. in the world

October 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As reported by Valley Wag, (via SmartCompany) here are the top 10 tech companies as the list now stands:

  1. China Mobile, $US31 billion – the country’s oil and steel firms are investing overseas, and this wireless company has followed suit.
  2. Cisco Systems, $US26.2 billion – Following the company’s acquisition strategy of social network sites, a memo to the company’s M&A team read: “Just because it has the word ‘network’ in it doesn’t mean you have to buy it.”
  3. Microsoft, $US21.2 billion – Although Vista and its marketing campaign with Jerry Seinfeld haven’t proven as popular as expected, the software giant is still doing well.
  4. Apple, $US20.7 billion – Apple has bounced back from its disappointed stake in the 1990s to be the developer of the world’s highest selling mp3 player – the iPod Nano.
  5. Google, $US12.7 billion – The release of the G1 phone powered by Google Android software should see the giant move into mobile phone software development.
  6. Intel, $US12 billion – More investment in chip factories will see this CPU developer continue to grow.
  7. Nokia, $US10.8 billion – The development of touch screen phones may see this developer become a player in the smartphone market.
  8. Dell, $US9 billion – the computer firm is being threatened by HP, and will most likely seek to invest in software.
  9. Motorola, $US7.2 billion – Will need to seek out where its mobile phone sector is going before it makes any huge ground.
  10. Taiwan Semiconductor, $US7 billion – Would be in a good position to acquire processor developer and Intel rival AMD.

FCC Clears Free Wireless Web

October 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Author: Amy Schatz

A proposal to create a free, national wireless Internet service got a boost as Federal Communications Commission engineers concluded that concerns are overblown about such service interfering with other carriers.

The report clears the way for the FCC to move forward with a plan to auction off airwaves to a bidder who agrees to offer free, national wireless Internet service. The FCC is expected to finalize rules this year and could begin auctioning off airwaves in early-to-mid 2009.

The report released Friday was bad news for T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG, which uses airwaves that abut the chunk of spectrum that’s set to be auctioned off. T-Mobile USA bought its spectrum for about $4 billion a few years ago.

T-Mobile has fought FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s proposal to encourage development of free Web access by raising concerns that the service would disrupt the company’s 3G wireless network, for which it charges customers. But FCC engineers said recent tests in Seattle showed the airwaves could be used for a wireless broadband service “without a significant risk of harmful interference.”

“This report confirms that we’re able to move forward with broadband services as proposed by Chairman Martin without causing harmful interference to license users of adjacent spectrum,” said an FCC spokesman.

A T-Mobile spokeswoman was not available for comment.

Wireless companies and some lawmakers have raised concerns about the plan, because the proposed auction rules appear to favor M2Z Networks Inc., a Kleiner Perkins-backed start-up that originally floated the free-Internet plan two years ago.

M2Z originally asked the FCC to give it a national 25 megahertz block of airwaves to build a national wireless Internet network. The start-up said it could pay for the build-out via advertising and a subscription-based plan for consumers willing to pay more for faster service.

The idea of handing out airwaves potentially worth billions didn’t go over very well at the agency. But in May, Mr. Martin proposed auctioning off the airwaves to a company willing to set aside some of its airwaves for free use.

The network would have to reach 50% of the U.S. population in four years and 95% within a decade.

Which Jobs Will Survive the Economic Crunch?

October 6, 2008 · Leave a Comment

…those that involve the integration, application and processing of data.

Source: Tim Ferguson, BusinessWeek

According to analyst house Forrester, as organizations look at reducing costs through mergers and acquisitions, skills around data, applications and process integration will be increasingly in demand.

Forrester analyst and author of a report looking at IT’s hottest roles, Marc Cecere, told silicon.com:

“For the economic problems that we’re going through right now, there are probably some roles that tend to be helped by this—and those are going to be those around architecture because there’s going to be a lot of data integration, application integration, especially process integrations.”

He added: “I think you’re going to get a lot greater interest in the enterprise version of these architects.”

Cecere explained that companies may look at becoming more global to combat the economic downturn, leading to increased demand for enterprise project managers, IT transformation specialists and process experts.

In addition, the Forrester VP said enterprise vendor managers could be in more demand as companies look to cut costs through better value tech deals and outsourcing.

But Cecere said this consolidation activity will put operational and infrastructure roles at risk as they can easily be duplicated within organisations. “Within those groups there’ll be highly specialised areas which will still be in demand for a long time,” he added.

These could include specialist skills in storage, software reuse (as part of SOA) and mobile and wireless devices.

Other effects of the credit crunch on the IT industry are expected to include longer hardware refresh cycles, increased use of software as a service and a reduction in available contracting roles.

T-Mobile Stuggling to Meet Android Demand

October 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Source: Eric Zeman, Information Week

Interest in the HTC G1 appears to be off the charts. In response to a huge number of pre-orders for the Android handset, T-Mobile is attempting to accommodate everyone. If you want an Android phone, you’d better act quickly.

T-Mobile issued the following statement regarding The G1’s availability:

Given the great anticipation and the heavy pre-sale demand for the T-Mobile G1 with Google, we nearly tripled the number of phones initially available for delivery on our Oct. 22 launch date, and have sold through them all. However, to accommodate additional T-Mobile customers who want to pre-order a device, they now have the opportunity to place a pre-order through Oct. 21, for delivery at a later date.

Also, people can still pre-register on the T-Mobile G1 Web site to be notified prior to launch where they can purchase the device beginning Oct. 22.

If you haven’t already ore-ordered the G1, it looks like your only bet is to pre-register for one. The caveat, of course, is that you have to be an existing T-Mobile customer to both pre-order and pre-register. If not, you have to wait until the G1 actually hits store shelves to pick one up. Given the high demand, the G1 might be this holiday season’s Tickle Me Elmo Extreme.
